Prepare and Stain Composite Decks
Project Scenario
A homeowner has a deck made of Trex®. It is faded. How does she stain it?
Trex® is a combination of wood and recycled plastic. The plastic shields the wood from moisture and insect damage. The wood protects the plastic from UV damage and gives the deck a natural feel.
Preparation
Stain
- Stir product thoroughly before occasionally during use.
- Apply stain using a good polyester brush. Do not paint in direct sun.
- Stain small sections at a time and avoid lap marks. Start at one edge and follow through the end of the boards.
- Do three or four boards at a time.
- One coat is recommended.
- Wait at least 24 hours before using the composite deck. Actual time may vary due to film thickness and weather conditions.
Primer Coat
Recommended products are self priming.
Caution! Things to consider
- Composite decks should be weathered at least 6 months before staining.
- Maintenance: re-stain depending on exposure or wear every 2 to 4 years.
- On a deck (horizontal surface), one coat is good. Two coats are not better.
- Avoid direct sunlight during application to minimize lap marks.
- Do not apply if there is a possibility of rain in the next 24 hours.
- Always follow manufacturer's recommendations.
